Stoner confident injury no MotoGP hurdle

Casey Stoner is confident a fresh injury won’t derail his charge towards a sixth successive Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix victory and a fairytale home MotoGP farewell.

Honda rider Stoner will start from pole position for Sunday’s Phillip Island race.

MotoGP championship chasers Jorge Lorenzo and Dani Pedrosa will start alongside the Australian on the front row of the grid.

Stoner clocked his best qualifying lap on Saturday just minutes after being flipped off his bike, falling heavily on his hip.

Already carrying an ankle injury, the Australian is confident a hip he admits is sore won’t stop his bid for history and destiny to cap off a weekend he has dominated through practice and qualifying.

“My biggest concern was my ankle and, as long as I haven’t damaged that, we can deal with the rest of it no problem,” Stoner said of the badly-damaged ankle he had surgery on just weeks ago.

“I’m not too worried.”

A record crowd is expected for Sunday’s race, with new marks set on Friday and Saturday as Australian fans get their last look at Stoner before his MotoGP retirement at the end of the season.

Lorenzo leads Pedrosa by 23 points in the championship going into the second-last race of the season.

They are the only two riders who can win the 2012 MotoGP title.

Lorenzo, the 2010 champion, could wrap up the championship if he finishes second, or picks up three points more than Pedrosa.

“It is important to make a good start. We are close to our goal, but we must keep going,” Lorenzo said.

Australian Kris McLaren, making his MotoGP debut as a late replacement rider for the Avintia team, failed to qualify inside the cutoff time for Sunday’s race.

He will have one final chance to make the race qualifying mark during Sunday morning’s warm-up session.
