Skaife, Ingall spearhead V8s coverage

Pay television channel Fox Sports is confident of winning over motorsport fans after debuting as V8 Supercars broadcaster this weekend.

In conjunction with free-to-air Channel Ten, Fox Sports paid an incredible $241 million to broadcast the tour over the next six years.

While many motorsport fans lamented the switch from host Channel Seven to a subscriber service, chief executive Patrick Delany said he was “unbelievably confident” fans would be happy.

“The biggest feature of all of this is we’re not going to interrupt any live race,” he said.

“Other than Bathurst, all of the races will be broadcast in the clear.”

Fox Sports’ coverage will be headed by Supercars legend Mark Skaife and recent retiree Russell Ingall, a partnership Delany said had mellowed since a nasty incident at Eastern Creek in 2003.

“Famously they nearly beat each other up on the track,” Delany said.

“We liken them to the two old guys in the stalls for the Muppet Show.”

Delany said his network had made a “big bet” with its multi-million dollar investment and would bring innovation to its coverage.

A range of new cameras, including “lipstick cam” and “hamburger cam”, will feature, though the well-loved pit-lane whiteboard would be retired in favour of a new “tech centre”.

Television coverage will be supplemented online with real-time telemetry and radio feeds from the cars.

It all begins with a 40-hour marathon of live action broadcast over four days from the Clipsal 500.

“It’s just massive, almost a working week of live coverage,” Delany said.

“Thursdays and Fridays have never been covered before if they’re just practice.

“I come from a culture where too much sport is never enough.”

Channel Ten has the live rights to six major races, including Clipsal, with same-day highlights shows for other race meets.

Each broadcaster will also put weekly motorsport-focused shows to air.
