Sandown champ Stanaway inks Supercars deal

Sandown 500 winner Richie Stanaway has finally secured a full-time Supercars drive, replacing retired veteran Jason Bright at Ford powerhouse Prodrive Racing Australia (PRA).

The 26-year-old New Zealand driver has signed a multi-year deal, ensuring he will officially take the step up to Supercars in 2018 after some impressive enduro cameos for PRA.

Stanaway combined with Cam Waters to not only win the Sandown 500 but at one stage led the Bathurst 1000 and finished second at the Gold Coast 600.

Stanaway will complete PRA’s four driver set up that also boasts Waters and ex-Bathurst champions Mark Winterbottom and Chaz Mostert.

“It’s been coming along for a while, but it’s good to finally have the deal done,” Stanaway said.

“I’m aware that I’ve got a long road ahead of me and a lot to learn, but I’m really motivated.

“I’m expecting it to be tough, that’s just a realistic approach.”

Stanaway will conduct his first official pre-season test with PRA at Sydney Motorsport Park on February 16.

“Having Richie join the team really completes the package for us,” PRA boss Tim Edwards said.

“We’ll head into 2018 with four great drivers in four fast cars, and we believe we’ll be a threat to win any time out.

Tekno Autosports is the only remaining Supercars team yet to confirm their 2018 line-up but Jack Le Brocq is expected to be unveiled by the Gold Coast outfit soon.
