Richards tips Skaife return

The thought of eclipsing Peter Brock’s record of nine Bathurst wins does not appeal to V8 great Jim Richards.

But his ex-teammate Mark Skaife may yet have the once untouchable mark in his sights after Richards claimed the six-time Bathurst winner still had “three or four years” driving left in him.

Richards has the most Bathurst wins by a living driver – seven – and still impresses behind the wheel, albeit in the V8 Supercars support category the Touring Car Masters.

But Richards is adamant he will not come out of a seven-year V8 retirement as an endurance round co-driver, despite being so close to the legendary Brock’s Bathurst record.

“Brocky deserves the record of King of the Mountain,” said Richards who won three straight at Bathurst with Brock from 1978.

“I wouldn’t want to be the one who took that.

“I have no intention of making a comeback. I have fond memories of Bathurst but I am over that.

“If I was asked I wouldn’t even want to.”

However, Richards believed Skaife may scratch his V8 itch in next year’s enduros and possibly beyond after again being eligible to race.

Skaife, who won the last of his Bathurst titles in 2010, has not been able to compete the last two years due to his role as V8 Commission chairman.

When his stint ends this month, Skaife will take up a new advisory role at V8 Supercars that won’t prevent him from competing.

“He is still at an age that he could do another three or four years,” Richards told AAP.

“But it depends on him. Once you are out of it for a fair while, as a co-driver you drive on old tyres and only get a certain amount of practice time it is difficult to match the ones who are driving all the time.

“He may decide that he finished on a winning note and think ‘why go back?’ but you never know.”

Skaife, 46, told AAP that he had not made up his mind about a V8 return as a co-driver.

“But anything is possible,” he said.

Skaife later told speedcafe.com website: “I haven’t made my mind up, but clearly I miss the competition which has been a big part of my life.

“I had half a day at Phillip Island in a (Porsche Cars Australia-owned) Carrera Cup car a couple of weeks ago which I really enjoyed.

“If I was to contemplate doing some races then I’d want to make sure that it’s something that I would enjoy, like the Porsche (Carrera) Cup.”

Leading Holden driver Craig Lowndes – who won the last of his five Bathurst titles with Skaife three years ago – welcomed the prospect of the five-time touring car champion’s return.

“Having him back as a driver will be great for the sport,” Lowndes told AAP.

“But once he gets to the point where he is behind the wheel again we will see how competitive he is.

“He’s obviously been out of the sport for a number of years and he needs to get himself focused, fit and ready to go.”
