Ricciardo makes pace Hungarian GP practice

Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo was quickest in first practice for the Hungarian Grand Prix on Friday with both Mercedes drivers down the standings.

Ricciardo posted a best 1 minute 17.613 seconds around the 4.381km Hungaroring circuit with teammate Max Verstappen under one tenth of a second behind in third.

Sebastian Vettel put his Ferrari between the Red Bull pair and his teammate Kimi Raikkonen was fourth.

Mercedes duo Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas were fifth and sixth respectively.

Though only the first session ahead of Sunday’s race, the standings suggest Mercedes could struggle on the tight track which is expected to suit Ferrari and Red Bull.

After crashing at his home German Grand Prix last weekend, Vettel trails Hamilton by 17 points in the world championship.

Second practice is later on Friday and third practice before qualifying on Saturday.
