Ricciardo fastest in Monaco F1 practice

Australia’s Daniel Ricciardo was fastest in final practice but teammate Max Verstappen may have destroyed his chances of victory at the Monaco Grand Prix after crashing out.

Ricciardo set a lap record of one minute 11.786 seconds in his Red Bull car on Saturday to edge out Dutchman Verstappen, who had been fastest before clipping a barrier and ploughing straight into the opposite wall.

Ricciardo had led both the first and second practice sessions from Verstappen on Thursday, setting the previous track record on Formula One’s glamour street circuit.

Friday was a rest day while qualifying takes place later on Saturday ahead of Sunday’s race.

Red Bull mechanics will have to work quickly on Verstappen’s battered car. If he fails to post a lap in qualifying he will start from the back of the grid for the race.

Mercedes world champion Lewis Hamilton, fifth fastest in final practice, leads Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel by 17 points in the driver standings after five of 21 races.
