Reynolds snares pole for GC600 Supercars

Holden’s David Reynolds will start Sunday’s Gold Coast 600 Supercars race from pole position as he attempts to put Bathurst heartbreak behind him.

Reynolds, who had to relinquish the lead in the closing laps of the Bathurst 1000 earlier this month due to severe cramps, clocked a fastest lap of one minute and 10.6976 seconds to secure his third pole from the past four races.

“I was really happy. The car in qualifying wasn’t the best and we went back to our set up we had yesterday and it transformed the car,” Reynolds said.

“I’m so happy. It’s so good.”

Saturday race winner Chaz Mostert (1:10.7085) will start the 102-lap race from second with championship challenger Shane Van Gisbergen (1:10.7148) third on the grid.

Championship leader Scott McLaughlin will have to start from eighth after he was one of three drivers disqualified from the shootout due to kerb-hopping on their flying lap.

McLaughlin, defending champion Jamie Whincup and Holden’s Tim Slade were all scratched from the session for cutting the kerbs on the 2.96km street circuit.

“Mistake on my part,” McLaughlin told Fox Sports.

“Sorry to everyone at Shell V-Power Racing but I think we’ve got a little hot rod today so see how we go.”

McLaughlin’s fifth-place finish on Saturday has given him a 14-point lead in the championship standings over Van Gisbergen.

Whincup and Slade will start from ninth and 10th respectively.

Sunday’s race starts at 2.25pm AEST with the possibility of an afternoon storm making drivers sweat on their race strategy.

“We’re sitting there hoping it doesn’t come because our car is awful to drive in the wet,” Reynolds said.
