Rain plays havoc with Belgium GP practice

Rain caused havoc with practice for the Belgium Grand Prix on Friday.

After the first session on Friday morning was practically rained-out with slow times and many drivers completing just one or two flying laps, the afternoon session was even worse as many of the drivers did not even venture out onto the track at all.

“You wait for four weeks that you can drive again, then you can, but then it is not possible” said Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel.

“I am particularly sad for the fans who waited in such rubbish weather and then saw so little.”

In the first session Sauber’s Kamui Kobayashi posted the fastest time.

In wet conditions, the Japanese driver posted a time of 2 minutes 11.389 seconds on the 7.004 kilometre-long track of the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps.

Williams’ Pastor Maldonado had the second fastest time in 2:11.941, followed by Australia’s Daniel Ricciardo in a Toro Rosso, who was 0.063 slower than the Venezuelan.

As the rain poured down, several drivers were hesitant to risk all and with eight minutes remaining of the session, eight of the drivers had not posted a time.

As a result, several of the top drivers competed only one or two flying laps and finished outside the top ten times.

Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso takes a 40-point lead into Sunday’s 12th race of the season, with the Red Bull duo of Mark Webber and defending champion Vettel second and third respectively.

Alonso has 164 points, while Webber is on 124. Vettel has 122.

A third practice session will be held ahead of qualifying on Saturday.
