Italian Romano Fenati recorded his first Grand Prix victory at the age of 16 on Sunday as he powered his FTR Honda to victory in the Moto3 category of the Spanish Grand Prix.
In a race marked by several crashes — only half of the 34-strong field finished — Fenati took the victory ahead of Spaniard Luis Salom (Kalex KTM) and Germany’s Sandro Cortese (KTM) in third.
Less than three weeks after his second place finish in Qatar, Fenati took the lead in the championship.
The Moto2 race was shortened by rain.
Spanish rider Pol Espargaro won on a Kalex, his sixth win at world championship level but first in this category.
He beat two Suter riders, Marc Marquez of Spain and Swiss Thomas Luthi.
While Marquez was ahead when the race was called to a premature halt on the 18th lap of the 26 laps race, 20-year-old Espargaro was adjudged the winner because he was leading on the preceding lap.
Marquez retained the overall lead in the standings thanks to his win in the season opening Qatar race.
