Power prevents Andretti Autosport sweep

Australian Team Penske driver Will Power posted the third-fastest qualifying time for the IndyCar race at The Milwaukee Mile on Friday, preventing Andretti Autosport from sweeping the top four starting positions.

Andretti Autosport dominated qualifying with pole winner Marco Andretti leading the way.

The team’s four drivers all finished in the top five in qualifying for Saturday’s 402-kilometre race.

“I thought we might have enough for pole today, but I made a little mistake on the last lap, and we just missed it,” Power said.

Andretti was fastest with a two-lap average speed of 274.36 kmph and will shame the front row of the starting grid with Canadian teammate James Hinchcliffe, who averaged 274.2 kmph on his qualifying run.

It was the second time Andretti won pole position at Milwaukee, where he claimed his first career IndyCar pole in 2008.

“So far, that was about as good as we could run, so I’m pleased,” Andretti said.

There have been seven different winners in the first eight IndyCar races this season. Andretti, currently second in the season standings behind Brazilian Helio Castroneves, has yet to post a victory this year.

Hinchcliffe is the only driver with multiple wins, having triumphed in St. Petersburg, Florida, and Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Hinchcliffe was perfectly satisfied with his qualifying spot.

“Don’t tell Marco, but the outside is way better on the start,” Hinchcliffe said of his position on the grid. “That is what I was going for.”

Andretti drivers Ryan Hunter-Reay, the defending IndyCar champion, and E.J. Viso qualified fourth and fifth, respectively. Hunter-Reay won last year’s race at Milwaukee, the first of his four wins in his championship season.
