No Supercars tension between Penske Fords

DJR Team Penske Fords are running one-two in the Supercars championship but Scott McLaughlin insists his battle with teammate Fabian Coulthard won’t spark internal tension.

Series leader Coulthard took out Saturday’s race at Darwin before McLaughlin chimed in with a victory on Sunday to give the team a clean sweep at Hidden Valley Raceway.

McLaughlin’s fourth victory of the season put him within 10 points of Coulthard, who notched his third victory for the year on the weekend.

But McLaughlin is adamant he is working in tandem with his fellow New Zealander.

“I feel like me and Fabs work together… the best I’ve ever had with a teammate,” McLaughlin said.

“I’m really enjoying the battle that we’re having. I think everyone in the team is really liking it too.

“It’s a real cool dynamic within the team.

“We know the boundaries, we can race hard but fair and no contact. So far I feel like there’s been no issue at all.”

After Coulthard’s victory on Saturday, he revealed the team had achieved its objective of grabbing a one-two finish.

“We drove our race to getting a one-two. Whatever the order was, it didn’t matter but I’m happy to get the win,” Coulthard said after the race.

Between McLaughin, Coulthard and defending series champion Shane van Gisbergen, Kiwis have won 11 of the season’s opening 12 races.

Van Gisbergen overcame a frustrating weekend to finish on the podium on Sunday, saying if Red Bull Racing couldn’t win, at least his compatriots could.

“The only good thing about another team winning is at least it’s two Kiwis,” Van Gisbergen said.
