Murphy back from surgery for Hamilton V8s

Fan favourite Greg Murphy has been given the all clear to race in the Hamilton round of the V8 Supercars championship this weekend after recovering from back surgery.

Murphy needed surgery after a heavy crash in the Sunday qualifying session of the season’s opening stop – the Clipsal 500 in early March in Adelaide.

He was forced to miss round two in Tasmania, leaving him at the foot of the points table heading to Hamilton.

Murphy says his surgeon has passed him fit to go back to racing and he has his sights on trying to grab a win in front of New Zealand fans.

“It would be absolutely phenomenal to win a race back at home,” he said on Wednesday.

“I’ve done it before and young Shane Van Gisbergen experienced that feeling last year and it’s the best feeling you could ever have.”

A four-time Bathurst 1000 winner, Murphy dominated the New Zealand round of the V8 Supercars when it was held at Pukekohe, but has struggled for results since the move to Hamilton.
