Mostert quickest again at Ipswich V8s

Ford’s Chaz Mostert has continued his quick start to this weekend’s V8 Supercars event at Queensland Raceway, topping the timesheets in final practice.

The Prodrive Racing star, who has reportedly signed a new deal with the team, clocked a fastest lap of one minute and 09.5639 seconds in the 15 minute session at the 3.12km circuit.

Mostert has won pole position for six of the past 11 races and will be the odds-on favourite for this afternoon’s back-to-back qualifying runs to determine the grids for the two 20-lap sprint races on Saturday afternoon.

Nissan’s Todd Kelly was second fastest with a 1:09.6102 while Volvo’s Scott McLaughlin posted the third quickest lap of the session with a 1:09.7706.

Championship leader Mark Winterbottom could only post the 13th quickest lap of the session while another title contender, Holden’s Fabian Coulthard, was back in a lowly 23rd.

Red Bull Racing duo Jamie Whincup and Craig Lowndes were 10th and 12th fastest respectively.

The session was an ugly one for Holden’s James Courtney, who didn’t even complete a lap before his Commodore started billowing smoke.

A broken oil line was identified as the cause but Courtney said he was confident the issue won’t have an impact on the rest of his day.

“Just a lot of smoke, so I switched it off and rolled in,” Courtney told AAP.

“It’ll be fine.”
