Mostert fastest at Supercars practice

Ford’s Chaz Mostert has gone fastest in practice at a wet Winton ahead of Saturday’s Supercars race.

The Tickford Racing driver clocked a one minute and 19.6424 seconds lap on the 3km circuit to pip championship leader Scott McLaughlin on the timesheets.

McLaughlin, who holds a 142-point series lead heading into Saturday’s 120km race, posted a 1:19.8677.

Another Tickford Racing driver, Lee Holdsworth was third-fastest with a 1:20.2914.

Several drivers came unstuck in tricky conditions as passing showers made grip levels difficult to maintain.

Red Bull Holden Racing Team duo Shane Van Gisbergen and Jamie Whincup both spent time off the track during the 40-minute session but managed to post times inside the top 10 to bypass the first portion of Saturday’s qualifying.

The session came to a premature end when Garry Rogers Motorsport’s Richie Stanaway hit a tyre wall with less than two minutes remaining after sliding off the track between turns six and seven.

The premature finish caught out McLaughlin’s DJR Team Penske teammate Fabian Coulthard, who could only post the 14th-quickest time and will have to go through all three stages of qualifying to be at the front of the grid for Saturday’s race.

Qualifying is scheduled to begin at 1.10pm with the race to start at 3.50pm.
