Massa still praying for Schumacher

Former teammate of Michael Schumacher, Felipe Massa says he prays every day for the return to health of the German Formula One legend.

Seven-times world champion Schumacher remains in an induced coma and a critical condition after suffering traumatic head injuries while skiing in December last year.

Schumacher retired for the second time after the 2012 season but his presence looms large over the sport, particularly in Australia.

The legendary German driver has the most wins in Australia of any driver, and still holds the Albert Park lap record, set in 2004.

Massa, now with off-season testing pace-setters Williams, has worn a helmet inscribed with “Schumi” across the visor as a tribute to his former teammate, which should continue through the F1 season.

He said the German ace was constantly in his thoughts.

“I always think about him every day, I pray for him every day,” Massa said.

“I keep thinking about him, he’s on my helmet, I keep praying and believe that things can be OK for him and his coming back.”

Massa has spent time by the side of Schumacher’s hospital bed in Grenoble, France, talking to the comatose Schumacher about his preparations for the F1 season.

The Brazilian suffered a severe head injury himself during qualifying for the 2009 Hungarian grand prix, fracturing his skull in two places.

A spokesman for Schumacher’s family said on Wednesday there were incremental signs Schumacher’s health was improving but urged caution.

“We are and remain confident that Michael will pull through and will wake up,” a statement read.

“There sometimes are small, encouraging signs, but we also know that this is the time to be very patient.”

Medical experts have been pessimistic of Schumacher’s chances to make a full recovery.
