Marquez breaks Doohan’s MotoGP record

Marc Marquez has become the first rider to win nine consecutive MotoGP races since Australia’s Mick Doohan in 1997 with a comfortable win in Germany.

The Spaniard started on pole position at the Sachsenring on Sunday and came home ahead of Honda teammate and compatriot Dani Pedrosa with Jorge Lorenzo on a Yamaha in third.

The win gives the 21-year-old a perfect total of 225 points in the championship standings with Pedrosa taking sole possession of second, 77 points back.

Italian Valentino Rossi, who finished fourth, is third on the standings.

Marquez was fastest qualifier for the seventh time this campaign after eclipsing the previous best time set by Australia’s former world champion Casey Stoner in 2008.

There are nine races to go in the 2014 season with the next round set for Indianapolis on August 10.
