Craig Lowndes and Fabian Coulthard have crashed just seconds apart in practice for the Supercars meet on Phillip Island.

Both men walked away from their impacts but their teams have plenty of thinking to do ahead of an expected wet race meet.

With the chequered flag flying from the first practice session, Lowndes’ Commodore was thrown into the air after a high-speed impact with a tyre wall.

A tyre appeared to blow on the the veteran Triple Eight driver, who was unfazed by the dramatic crash.

“I’m OK,” he told Fox Sports.

“The right front tyre blew and you don’t want a right front tyre going on a left hand corner.

“I became a passenger and the car sailed through like it was an ice rink.”

Repairs will be needed to the Team Vortex Holden if he is to make the track for the final practice session on Friday.

“That’s a hard hit. We’ll get it in and have a good look at it,” Team Vortex engineer John McGregor said.

Coulthard, second in the championship standings behind leader Shane van Gisbergen, hit the fence at low speed after sailing through a gravel trap earlier on the same lap.

The DJR Team Penske driver looked confused by the incident but his Falcon in in better shape than the No.888 Commodore.

In an action-packed session, Simona De Silvestro also brought a red flag after running wide and getting bogged in her attempt to re-enter the field.

A forecast of intermittent rain across the weekend at the Victorian coastal circuit raises the possibility of more racing.

David Reynolds emerged on top of the timing chart in Friday’s first practice session with a 1:30.8476 lap – one ten-thousandth of a second ahead of van Gisbergen.

Scott McLaughlin, who swept last year’s meet in his Volvo, was fifth.

There was further bad news for Lowndes on Friday, who was docked 15 points for an incident with Cameron Waters at Symmons Plains.
