Yamaha’s world champion Jorge Lorenzo will start on pole for Sunday’s Spanish MotoGP Grand Prix in Jerez after pipping fellow Spaniard Dani Pedrosa and Marc Marquez in Saturday’s final qualifying session.
Lorenzo, who was fastest in three of the four practice sessions on Friday and Saturday, clocked 1:38:673 to edge out his championship rivals by over two tenths of a second.
Pedrosa came in second with a time of 1:38:920 followed by his 20-year-old Honda team-mate Marquez at 1:38:971.
Britain’s Cal Crutchlow, who was fastest in Saturday’s early practice session, will start in fourth with Lorenzo’s team-mate the seven-time MotoGP champion Valentino Rossi back in fifth.
Marquez is currently level with Lorenzo at the top of the championship standings after becoming the youngest ever MotoGP winner when he landed the Grand Prix of the Americas in Texas a fortnight ago.
