Kiwi Dixon wins in Toronto IndyCar

New Zealander Scott Dixon passed Frenchman Sebastien Bourdais with nine laps to go to win the first of two IndyCar street races in Toronto, where controversy and comedy invaded Victory Lane on Saturday.

Dixon’s win, his second consecutive after picking up his first victory of the season last weekend at Pocono, Pennsylvania, was clean and clear.

It was the 31st of his career and moved him into a tie for seventh on the all-time win list with Scottish teammate Dario Franchitti, Bourdais and Canada’s Paul Tracy.

Bourdais was second in his first podium finish since the 2007 Champ Car season, but his celebration was short-lived: The glass trophy he received slipped off the stand as it was handed to him and shattered into thousands of pieces.

Franchitti, meanwhile, was handed the third-place trophy only to learn during the podium celebration he’d been stripped of the finish for blocking Australian Will Power on the final lap.

Franchitti’s Target Chip Ganassi Racing team appealed, and the penalty was overturned roughly two hours after the race ended.

Franchitti was in third when the race restarted with one lap remaining. The cars were lined up single file on the restart and Power set up an attempt to pass that Franchitti tried to defend.

Power eventually got past Franchitti, but couldn’t hold it as he hit the tire barrier after slipping ahead. Power finished in 15th place.

IndyCar penalised Franchitti after the race for blocking Power, issuing a 25-second penalty.

The Ganassi team presented car data that showed steering and braking points from the incident. Race control also viewed additional video in restoring Franchitti’s third-place finish.

Dixon now climbs one place to third in the series standings on 342 points, behind Brazilian leader Helio Castroneves (386 points) and American defending champion Ryan Hunter-Reay (345).

There are five rounds remaining after the second Toronto race on Sunday, which Dixon will start on pole position.
