IndyCar tries to replace axed China race

IndyCar officials are talking to US race tracks in search of a replacement race for the planned August 19 event in China that has been cancelled.

And while Texas Motor Speedway officials have reportedly rejected a chance to host a second IndyCar race this season, Michigan International Speedway has shown interest in returning the open-wheel series to the rural oval course.

IndyCar chief executive Randy Bernard said on Wednesday as he announced the wiping out of the China race that he hoped to keep the season program at 16 races, the eighth of which is set for Saturday at the Milwaukee one-mile oval.

Several drivers mentioned the Road America course in nearby Elkhart Lake, like Michigan a former IndyCar track, as a course they would like to see considered as a replacement for China.

After a race next week at Iowa, IndyCar goes to Canada for races in Toronto and Edmonton in July, then to Mid-Ohio’s road course before what would have been the China race.

Final races are set for August 26 at Sonoma, California; September 2 at Baltimore, Maryland, and the September 15 oval finale at Fontana, California.
