Holdsworth fastest during Bathurst warm-up

Holden’s Lee Holdsworth has set the pace in the warm-up for Sunday’s Bathurst 1000 as rain threatens Mount Panorama.

Holdsworth clocked two minutes, 06.33 seconds as teams made last-minute changes before the 161-lap classic starts at 11.10am (AEDT).

Supercars series leader Scott McLaughlin is the man to beat after clocking a lap record in Saturday’s top-10 qualifying.

A maiden Bathurst title appears McLaughlin’s to lose after the Ford gun claimed pole in 2min:03.83secs – the fastest Supercars lap on the famous street circuit.

He became the first to crack the 2min:04secs barrier on the mountain after shattering the record mark he had set barely 24 hours earlier in Friday’s practice.

However, wet weather forecast for Sunday is expected to throw the form guide out the window.

Teams were allowed to use wet tyres in the warm-up in preparation for the miserable weather predicted.

“It is such a long day today, anything is going to happen with this weather. We have just been aiming at having a good car for today,” Holdsworth said.

Polesitter McLaughlin will start in the front row alongside Holden cult hero David Reynolds while 2013 Bathurst champion Mark Winterbottom is third on the grid.

Jamie Whincup – McLaughlin’s nearest rival on the drivers’ standings just 84 points shy of the Ford star – faces a battle to claim his fifth Bathurst crown after only qualifying 11th fastest.
