Formula One drivers jostle for 2021 seats

A GLANCE AT THE FORMULA ONE TEAMS AFTER NIKITA MAZEPIN SIGNED FOR HAAS:-

MERCEDES: Valtteri Bottas has signed up for 2021 and though world champion Lewis Hamilton is out of contract after this season, he is widely expected to agree a new long-term deal with the team.

FERRARI: Charles Leclerc has established himself as the No.1 in red on a long-term deal to 2024. He will have a new teammate in Carlos Sainz, who arrives from McLaren on a two-year deal to replace Sebastian Vettel who has to leave after six years and has found a new home in Aston Martin from 2021.

RED BULL: Max Verstappen has a deal until 2023 but Alex Albon is not yet reconfirmed in the other spot. Albon has improved in recent races but his future remains uncertain.

MCLAREN: Carlos Sainz and Lando Norris impressed to earn deals with McLaren for 2020 which has gifted the former a place at Ferrari while youngster Norris will be paired with experienced Australian Daniel Ricciardo who gets a multi-year deal in a move from Renault.

RENAULT: Fernando Alonso returns to F1 racing after two years in other motorsports, starting a third term at the team whom he won his two world titles – 2005 and 2006 – with. He replaces McLaren-bound Ricciardo to drive alongside teammate Esteban Ocon who already has a contract for 2021.

ALFA ROMEO: Kimi Raikkonen and Antonio Giovinazzi bring experience and youth again to Alfa Romeo having been confirmed to continue in 2021.

HAAS: Kevin Magnussen and Romain Grosjean have both been released for 2021 with the team looking for two new drivers. The 21-year-old Russian Nikita Mazepin has been confirmed with Ferrari youngster Mick Schumacher, son of German legend Michael, a possible teammate.

RACING POINT: Sebastian Vettel joins from 2021 onwards after getting no new contract at Ferrari, replacing Sergio Perez who had a contract to 2022 but reportedly with a buy-out clause the team could activate. Lance Stroll’s deal expires after 2020 but will surely stay in place as father Lawrence is a major backer as the team rebrands to Aston Martin.

ALPHA TAURI: Italian GP winner Pierre Gasly has been confirmed as retaining his place for 2021 but Daniil Kvyat of Russia is still sweating on his seat. Any vacancy would likely be filled internally from the driver academy of Red Bull.

WILLIAMS: Impressive youngster George Russell has been confirmed for 2021 as his Nicholas Latifi, who brings much needed financial backing. A mid-season change of team ownership sparked rumours about a driver switch which ultimately came to nothing.
