Ford’s McLaughlin secures Supercars pole

Qualifying king Scott McLaughlin has done it again and will start from the front of the grid for Saturday’s Supercars race under lights in Sydney.

The two-time defending champion roared around Sydney Motorsport Park to win the qualifying shootout ahead of Holden rival Shane van Gisbergen.

It is the Ford flyer’s 64th pole of his career and puts him in the perfect position to secure his fourth victory from six completed races this season.

“You always feel like this is happy hour now with these times and these conditions,” McLaughlin said.

“I think we need to make our car a little bit better in the slow stuff but I’m really happy with it.

“It’s going to be an interesting one; even if we don’t get away with three wins this weekend, if we can start in good spots and make the most of it.”

Ford’s Cameron Waters will start the night race from third, Red Bull Holden legend Jamie Whincup qualified fourth fastest, while Tickford’s Lee Holdsworth came fifth.

McLaughlin, who has a 49-point championship lead going into this weekend’s round at Eastern Creek, is going to take some beating across the three races.

Saturday night’s 32-lap race will get under way at 6:25pm.
