Five countries in race talks: V8 boss

Up to three overseas events could feature on the 2015 calendar, according to V8 Supercars boss James Warburton.

However, just six rounds – all in Australia – will be shown live on free-to-air TV from 2015 under the new six-year, $241 million media deal detailed on Saturday by Warburton.

Still, Warburton has vowed “more eyeballs than ever” will be watching the sport from next year.

The V8 Supercars CEO said he was in talks with venues at five new countries with a “minimum of one and maximum of three” overseas events to be held in 2015.

He confirmed one would be at Austin, Texas at the Circuit of the Americas after a two-year hiatus, with a plan to also hold a second or “twin” US round.

Warburton also revealed Adelaide had been locked in to host the season opener until 2021 in a new multi-million dollar deal.

The V8 boss was clearly not fazed by failed overseas experiments in China, Bahrain and Abu Dhabi.

Warburton confirmed he had spoken last month with all the major US circuits thanks to meetings set up by American racing legend Roger Penske and hoped to announce their new overseas destinations by mid-year.

“We have four years left on that (Austin) contract and that is a contract that we will honour,” he said.

“The economic benefit of a twin (US race) is something we are investigating.

“In addition to that, there are five other countries we are talking to about extending our international coverage.

“If we need more time, then we’ll take it. We’ve got to get them all right and make sure they are sustainable as long-term events.”

Warburton was also excited by the details of their media deal which he said would increase total audience levels significantly despite a shift to pay TV coverage.

He provided details of the deal announced last December with Foxtel, Fox Sports and Network Ten for all media rights including digital from 2015-20.

Warburton said live coverage of every practice, qualifying session and race would be shown ad-free and in high definition on pay TV.

But only Adelaide, Townsville, Sandown, Bathurst, Gold Coast and Sydney events would be shown live on Network Ten.

A one-hour highlights package of the remaining events would be screened at 8:30pm (AEDT) on One and 11:30pm on Ten on the Saturday and Sunday nights of the events.

And a one-hour package would be shown on Sundays at 4pm on Ten.

“There will be more eyeballs than ever (watching under the new deal),” he said.

Warburton said from 2015, total hours of their TV coverage would increase to 1140 – up 360 per cent.

Magazine show RPM will return to Ten under the new deal with similar programs V8Xtra and Motorsport 360 aired on pay TV.

However, Warburton would not reveal how much cash fans would have to cough up to see the full season live on pay TV.
