Charles Leclerc topped the timesheets ahead of Ferrari teammate Sebastian Vettel while five-time world champion Lewis Hamilton slid his Mercedes into a wall in practice ahead of Sunday’s Canadian Grand Prix.

Australian driver Daniel Ricciardo was eighth fastest in both Friday practice sessions, posting a faster one minute 13.016 in his afternoon outing in Montreal.

Leclerc’s lap time of 1:12.177 put him 0.074 seconds faster than Vettel, and 0.134 seconds up on Valtteri Bottas in a Mercedes.

F1 championship leader Hamilton, who was quickest in the first practice, went into a wall in the chicane at turns eight and nine at the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve and limped back onto the garage with a punctured tyre and damage to the floor of his car.

Hamilton was unable to continue the session but had already set a time which put him sixth behind Carlos Sainz in a McLaren and Kevin Magnussen in a Haas.

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen also hit a wall in the second session, ending 13th, as did Alfa Romeo’s Antonio Giovinazzi in the morning run.

Qualifying will determine grid positions as Mercedes attempt to maintain their perfect series with a seventh win in the season’s seventh race.

Hamilton leads the championship by 17 points over Bottas with Vettel third on 82 points, four ahead of Verstappen.
