Ford’s Will Davison is out to keep his V8 Supercars title challenge on track on the streets of Townsville this weekend.

Of the three main competitors for this year’s championship, Davison is the odd man out with teammate Mark Winterbottom and Holden’s Jamie Whincup having both won races in far north Queensland.

Whincup in particular is the king of Townsville’s street circuit, only finishing outside the top two once in the six races held at the venue since V8s starting racing there in 2009.

Davison has a best finish of second from the inaugural race in 2009 with some up-and-down results since then.

But the 29-year-old heads north confident he can get the results to overhaul the 38 points he trails Whincup by in the standings and regain the title lead.

“I’ve had some reasonable results there, haven’t won a race but I hadn’t won a race at many places before this year,” Davison told AAP.

“It certainly hasn’t been a bad place for me.

“I’ve been competitive there.”

Davison entered the previous round in Darwin with a 10-point lead in the standings but a win and a second place to Whincup put the defending champion back in the box seat in an intriguing championship battle.

Davison said Whincup’s record at Townsville was second-to-none but that was a similar scenario his rivals face at every V8s event.

“Jamie’s the guy to beat everywhere,” said Davison, who is chasing his first V8s title after finishing runner-up to Whincup in 2009.

“Of course, he’s got impressive stats at every track we go to. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s won at every track.

“But there’s been a lot of tracks where he’s dominated in the past few years where we’ve been able to take it to him this year so I’m looking forward to getting up there and taking it to him, no different.”

The Townsville 400 begins on Friday with four half-hour practice sessions ahead of one 200km race each on Saturday and Sunday.
