Bright, Courtney claim pole at Winton

Holden have dominated Sunday’s back-to-back qualifying sessions for the final two races of the weekend’s V8 Supercars round in Winton.

A lightning-fast Jason Bright, who finished third in Saturday’s opening race, grabbed his first pole position at the rural Victorian track since 2006.

He will start the first of two 34-lap races on the front row, alongside the Holden of Tony D’Alberto, who posted the best qualifying result of his V8 career.

Ford’s Mark Winterbottom, James Courtney of Holden and David Reynolds rounded out the top five for race two of the weekend.

Courtney will start race three on pole, having outpaced Bright who qualified second fastest ahead of Ford young gun Chaz Mostert.

It was a disappointing qualifying morning for Holden heavyweights Jamie Whincup and Craig Lowndes.

Series leader Whincup continued to struggle with a tailshaft problem that forced his early exit from race one and he could only qualify 18th and 17th for the remaining events.

His Red Bull Racing teammate Craig Lowndes didn’t fare much better and will start back in 17th and 13th.

Nissan also failed to build on their brilliant run on Saturday, with race-one victor James Moffat qualifying in 25th and ninth.

Race two begins at 1.35pm (AEST) followed by race three at 4.15pm.
