Big wet rocking Supercars in Tasmania

Jamie Whincup has emerged on top of the timing charts in a hairy qualifying session at Symmons Plains on Sunday.

Drivers competed against each other and the weather on the drenched circuit, with worsened conditions from Saturday when a 12-car pile-up decimated the field.

The fall-out from the monster crash meant just 22 cars were able to compete in the session.

Whincup proved his ability on the wet tyres, and will start from pole in Sunday’s race

He will be joined at the front by Saturday pole-sitter Scott McLaughlin, with Chaz Mostert and Tim Slade in the second row.

Championship leader Shane van Gisbergen will start from fifth.

On Saturday, a 12-car pile-up ended hopes of a legitimate race.

Just three race laps were completed either side of the crash, with van Gibsergen declared the winner but no drivers banking championship points.

Will Davison, James Courtney, Taz Douglas and Rick Kelly are not driving today due to damage suffered on Saturday.

The field will be hopeful of avoiding a similar incident today, but will have to contend with an even wetter track.

A run-off by teenage talent Alex Rullo sent his Commodore skidding out of control across the grass and over the track.

He narrowly missed other cars but caused a red flag when he landed in the gravel and will start from the back of the field.

Sunday’s race is currently scheduled for 2:05pm AEST, but may be delayed due to the inclement weather.
