Aussie Miller pipped at Styrian MotoGP

A last lap move by Portugal’s Miguel Oliveira has narrowly cost Australia’s Jack Miller his second MotoGP career victory.

Miller was second heading into the final lap of the Styrian Grand Prix in Austria when he attempted to pass leader Pol Espargaro.

The race had been shortened to 12 laps following an earlier crash involving championship contender Maverick Vinales.

As the leading pair jostled and ran wide, Oliveira seized his chance to sneak past both on the final corner and become the first Portuguese rider to win a MotoGP race, with Miller finishing second and Espargaro third.

Despite the near miss, Miller was happy with the result after injuring a shoulder in a crash in free practice earlier in the weekend.

He admitted Oliveira’s move had caught him by surprise.

“I tried to brake a little early and ride underneath Pol,” Miller said.

“I didn’t expect Oliveira to be there.”

The second-place finish is Miller’s best result since his maiden MotoGP win in 2016 and his highest finish since joining Ducati in 2018.

With four different race winners in the opening five rounds of the season, Miller is now third on the standings, 14 points behind leader Fabio Quartararo.

The championship has a short break before the next event in Italy at Misano on September 13 with Miller aiming to use the time away from the track to heal his injured shoulder.
