Aussie given World Superbike chance

Queenslander Mike Jones will compete in next month’s World Superbike Championship at the Nurburgring in Germany.

The 18-year-old Brisbane-based rider has been given a ride on MtM Racing’s Yamaha at the championship round after impressing with his 2011 Australian Superstock 600cc championship win.

“It was hard to believe a team from Europe contacted me and asked me to race their bikes at a world event,” Jones said.

“The team has a great reputation with their rider Jed Metcher winning the Superstock class for MtM racing last year and they have again logged good results in 2012.

“It’s a chance of a lifetime and I’m thankful to everyone at MtM Racing, Yamaha Australia and YRT for working together to make this come about.

“I can’t wait to get over there.”

MtM Racing manager Rob Vennegoor said Jones’s results in the past 12 months had opened the door for the youngster to be given an opportunity.

“I’m excited to give this opportunity to Mike,” Vennegoor said.

“His results combined with his knowledge of Yamaha’s R6 (bike) means he is a worthy addition to the team and I look forward to seeing what he brings to the race track.”

The Nurburgring round of the World Superbike Championship will be held from September 7-9.
