Yulong tasted Blue Diamond success last year with a seven-figure Extreme Choice colt sourced from the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, and the powerhouse operation is hoping history can repeat itself after securing the headline lot on Day 2 of this year’s auction.
The Victorian-based group went to $2 million on Wednesday to secure a colt by Newgate stallion Extreme Choice out of the Hinchinbrook mare Hazlebrook.
The youngster is a brother to Group 3-winning filly Wollombi, who was purchased by Yulong for $500,000 at the 2024 National Yearling Sale, and general manager Jun Zhang said the colt was a must-have for the operation.
“He’s a very special colt, he was our only target that we definitely needed to buy,” Zhang said.
“We can see some stallion potential with him and also we own the sister as well, she is in-foal to Diatonic, so we try and create our own families so that is another reason why we had to get him.
“Extreme Choice is a very successful stallion and could be a history (making) stallion in the future, so this is why Mr Zhang is trying to get every Extreme Choice he can.”
Yulong’s confidence in the stallion was vindicated last year when Devil Night carried the famous colours to victory in the Blue Diamond Stakes, following a $1.4 million Magic Millions purchase two years earlier.
The $2 million Extreme Choice colt became the second yearling to reach that figure at this year’s Gold Coast sale, following the Frankel colt knocked down to Coolmore on Day 1.
The Kingstar Farm-consigned colt was one of several big-ticket lots on Wednesday, with two Snitzel colts each selling for $1.5 million.
Coolmore’s Tom Magnier secured a brother to talented three-year-old Beadman for that price, while China Horse Club, Newgate and Clarke Bloodstock combined to buy a son of Shamexpress mare Embrace Me.
Snitzel also produced a $1.2 million filly out of Group 1 winner Krone, purchased by James Harron, while the Rising Sun Syndicate paid the same amount for an I Am Invincible filly out of Key, destined for Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott.
As the Gold Coast sale continues, yearling buyers and racing fans alike are already turning their attention to future racetrack returns through leading Australian betting sites.
Wednesday’s five seven-figure yearlings lifted the tally to eight million-dollar lots across the opening two days, with close to $94 million traded at an average of $288,267, a median of $200,000 and a clearance rate of 83 percent.
