Yulong youngster Grand Prairie kickstarts campaign with win at Randwick

Trainer Peter Snowden believes Grand Prairie is far from the finished product but remains optimistic about the colt’s potential after he broke through for his first win at Randwick’s Kensington track.

Racing in the Yulong silks, the Written Tycoon colt returned from a spell to score in the TAB Plate (1100m) on Wednesday, despite racing greenly in the straight.

“He’s still working it out. He got to the front and started looking around a bit, but that’s not a bad thing,” Snowden said. “He’s still learning and managed to win, so the more racing he gets, the better he’ll be.”

Jockey Tom Sherry had Grand Prairie ($6) positioned perfectly behind the leader and once clear, the two-year-old held off the late-charging Pictor ($31), with race favourite Ninja ($2.10) back in third.

Snowden hasn’t locked in future plans but noted there are ample opportunities in coming weeks. “He’s come back in good order. It’s a great time of year to have a horse ready to go,” he said.

Grand Prairie, out of dual Group 1 winner Viddora, was purchased by Yulong for $2.55 million in 2020.

Later in the program, Godolphin unveiled a promising filly in Custom, who unleashed a powerful sprint to win the Drinkwise Plate (1100m) with ease.

Stable rep Darren Beadman said the team had high hopes for her. “She did that so easily. There’s a lot more to come from her,” Beadman said. “She might not be at Tempted’s level yet, but fillies like this often improve sharply.”

Tempted was a standout for Godolphin this season, capturing the Percy Sykes Stakes and running third in the Golden Slipper. She is set to join Ciaron Maher next term.
