Winx aims to defend Cox Plate

Champion mare Winx is listed to return to the track in a barrier trial at Randwick.

Winx has not been seen publicly since she won the Doncaster Mile in April, her ninth consecutive victory and sixth at Group One level.

Trainer Chris Waller is planning to run Winx in the Warwick Stakes, Chelmsford Stakes and George Main Stakes in Sydney before she travels to Melbourne in search of back-to-back Cox Plates.

Winx is entered in an 850m-heat on Randwick’s Kensington track on Friday alongside John O’Shea-trained Group One winners Hartnell and Magic Hurricane.

Godolphin also have ATC Derby placegetter Tally and the Group One placed Generalife entered in the trial.

Waller said he would also enter Winx in a trial at Rosehill the following Tuesday in case of wet weather later this week.

“She is coming along really well,” Waller said.

“She had a gallop on the course proper at Rosehill last week and is where she needs to be.”

Golden Slipper winner Capitalist is set to trial in a separate 850m-heat at Randwick against Winx’s unbeaten brother El Divino and Champagne Stakes winner Prized Icon.

A host of Winx’s talented stablemates are also expected to trial on Friday including 2015 Sydney Cup winner Grand Marshal.
