The Memsie Stakes is the preferred option for Awesome Rock but the horse will need a high attrition rate to get a start in the Group One race.

Co-trainers Leon and Troy Corstens have some of their spring carnival hopefuls nominated for Saturday’s Caulfield program including smart mare Vezalay but she is 27th in the ballot for the Group Three Cockram Stakes (1200m).

Caulfield Guineas aspirant Mr Individual resumes in the Group Three McNeil Stakes for his second start after winning at Bendigo.

Awesome Rock, placed in the 2014 McNeil Stakes, is last in the ballot order among in the 26 nominations for the weight-for-age Memsie (1400m) with a field limit of 16 plus emergencies.

He is also one of three horses from the stable entered in a 1400m handicap where he is also down the ballot but there are a number of dual nominations.

“He’s right down the order in the Memsie so hopefully he gets a run in that. That’s our number one preference,” Troy Corstens said.

“He’s nominated in the 1400 handicap as a back-up.

Corstens says Awesome Rock is a high-class animal and believes the best is ahead of the son of Fastnet Rock heading into his four-year-old season.

“I think a race like the Toorak or something like that will be right up his alley this campaign,” he said.

There are nine Group One winners among the nominations for the Memsie including Boban and last year’s Cox Plate runner-up Fawkner.

Boban is one of two entries for premier Sydney trainer Chris Waller along with Weary.

The TAB opened a market on Monday with Boban the $6 favourite.

He has firmed to $5 while Fawkner has gone from $14 to $7.

Multiple Group One winner Happy Trails ($12) will run in the Memsie for the fourth successive year.

He was second in 2012 when it was still a Group Two race and finished seventh in 2013 and eighth last year.
