She doesn’t yet have the profile of her close relative and stablemate Rubick, but trainer Gerald Ryan believes Lucky Raquie can shine in her own right, starting with the Widden Stakes.
Like the leading Blue Diamond Stakes contender, Lucky Raquie is by Encosta De Lago. Her mother is Monsoon Wedding, a half-sister to Rubick’s dam Sliding Cube with both mares daughters of the late Shantha’s Choice.
Lucky Raquie is owned by her breeder Muzaffar Yaseen’s Teeley Assets which also has a share in Rubick, winner of Saturday’s Blue Diamond Prelude.
After running third in the Gimcrack Stakes in October, Lucky Raquie was given a spell with a view to the autumn.
Ryan has her primed for her return in Saturday’s 1100m Group Three race at Rosehill which has attracted eight entries including Gimcrack winner Alpha Miss and Lucky Raquie’s stablemate Ygritte.
“I was pleased with her barrier trial win last Tuesday and she came through it really well,” Ryan said.
“She is a really nice filly and I think she will go well.
“The Widden is a big step up for Ygritte but she deserves her chance.”
Ygritte was a two-length winner on debut at Kembla Grange on February 1 despite showing her newness when she laid out in the straight.
Last-start Randwick winner Unequivocal is also among the Widden entries while Mossfun, who won the Inglis Nursery on debut in December, is also there.
Ryan will have debutant Bachman in Saturday’s juvenile race for colts and geldings, the Canonbury Stakes.
“He is a really nice colt by All American but I think he might need more than 1100 metres,” Ryan said.
Bachman is out of multiple stakes winning mare Ain’t Seen Nothin’ who ran a close third to Mummify in the 2003 Underwood Stakes.
Leading Golden Slipper contender Fighting Sun is one of two Canonbury entries for Gai Waterhouse with the other Mr Cha Cha, a winner at Wyong last month.
Fighting Sun is on the third line of Slipper betting at $11 alongside stablemate Nayeli behind Earthquake at $4.60, and Rubick and Magic Millions winner Unencumbered at $8.
Ghibellines, a half brother to star filly Guelph, will also run in the Canonbury.
