Raging favourite Warwoven has been thrown into doubt for Saturday’s Magic Millions 2YO Classic after showing signs of lameness on the eve of the $3 million feature.
Queensland stewards conducted their customary pre-race veterinary inspections on Friday morning and reported that Warwoven was lame in the off foreleg.
The Bjorn Baker-trained colt’s stablemate Masvingo, who is owned in similar interests, was also found to be lame, this time in the near foreleg, with both runners granted until early Saturday to prove their fitness.
“Both runners will undergo a further examination tomorrow morning prior to scratching time,” Racing Queensland stewards said in a statement.
Any decision to rule Warwoven out of the 1200-metre contest would significantly alter the complexion of the race, with the unbeaten colt having firmed into as short as $1.70 prior to the announcement.
The $380,000 Gold Coast yearling has topped the market since his emphatic win at Eagle Farm on January 3, which followed a dominant debut success at Randwick on December 20.
With uncertainty surrounding the favourite, punters are keeping a close eye on markets through leading Australian betting sites ahead of the Magic Millions Classic.
Currently second favourite at $6 is the unbeaten Chris and Corey Munce-trained Hellbent colt Zip Lock, ahead of Maribyrnong Plate winner Tornado Valley ($8) and Shiki ($11).
