The Warwick Stakes is the traditional starting point for many spring hopefuls and with 13 Group One winners entered this year, it shapes as one of the best.
Premier Sydney trainer Chris Waller has nine entries in Saturday’s Group Two 1400m weight-for-age feature at Randwick, eight of which are already proven at the highest level.
Kermadec, Preferment, Foreteller, Hawkspur, Moriarty, Grand Marshal, Beaten Up and Royal Descent are the Waller-trained Group One winners while 2013 Spring Champion Stakes winner Complacent is set to make his return from a long injury break.
The Godolphin five-year-old hasn’t raced since he finished second to Polanski in the 2013 Victoria Derby and has had two recent barrier trials in preparation for his first-up assignment.
Gai Waterhouse has entered Doomben Cup winner Pornichet and Queen Of The Turf winner Amanpour who is also nominated for the Group Three Toy Show Quality (1300m) for fillies and mares.
Royal Descent, First Seal and Gust Of Wind are also entered for both races.
The John Sargent-trained Australian Oaks winner Gust Of Wind is on a path to the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups.
“Gust Of Wind is a big strong mare,” Sargent said.
“Either race will be too short but they have to start somewhere.
“She will stay all day. She is a genuine distance horse.”
Glen Boss, who rode Kermadec to win the Doncaster Mile, said he was looking forward to his second ride on the Waller-trained horse.
“He’s got to make the transition to four-year-old now and weight-for-age,” Boss said.
“It’s a big step but he should have won an Australian Guineas, he should have won the Ryder and then he won the Doncaster. So his form is pretty solid.”
Kermadec had a race day work-out on Saturday with Tye Angland aboard and Waller said that experience should stand him in good stead for the Warwick Stakes.
“The benefit of that will be seen on Saturday,” he said.
“It’s always good to give them a change in routine. I think he and Royal Descent are the most forward at this stage of their preparations.”
