Ulmann is bound for another trip to Brisbane after scoring a first-up win in the Wangoom Handicap at Warrnambool.
The Darren Weir-trained gelding gave the champion trainer his fifth winner on the program on the second day of the three-day carnival in Wednesday’s 1200m-feature sprint.
Ulmann raced in Queensland as a three-year-old in 2015 when he had three starts for former trainer Peter Moody, including a second to Winx in the Sunshine Coast Guineas.
The Sunshine Coast Guineas was the start of Winx’s 17-run winning streak which has included two Cox Plates and two Queen Elizabeth Stakes.
“His claim to fame is I suppose he started the winning run of Winx,” Moody, who still retains a share in the five-year-old, said.
Moody, who trained Kneeling to win the 2014 Wangoom Handicap, bought Ulmann because he reminded the former trainer of Dissident.
“I thought he was a dead ringer of Dissident but he hasn’t won five Group One races,” Moody said.
Ulmann had a delayed start to an autumn campaign as Weir struggled to get him over a back ailment.
Now Moody and Weir are looking towards Brisbane with the Stradbroke Handicap at Eagle Farm his target.
“We were going to take him to Perth but we were worried about him jarring up on the real firm ground,” Moody said.
“We weren’t sure he’d handle the soft either so we thought we’d aim him at Brisbane and hope he’d handle it.”
After he recorded four winners before Ulmann’s success, Moody joked that Weir should give the “battlers” their chance at winning a race over the carnival.
“But then I realised he had one of mine in the next,” Moody said.
“He’s got no peer at the moment, Darren, and does a tremendous job and I’m very pleased that he was able to get this little bloke home.”
Ridden by apprentice Ben Allen, Ulmann ($17) scored by 2-1/4 lengths from stablemate Stellar Collision ($7) with Well Sprung ($10) the same margin away third.
The $3.40 favourite Jungle Edge burst through the barriers before the start, receiving an abrasion to the lower gum before being allowed to take his place.
After a wide run, Jungle Edge finished fifth, beaten just under five lengths.
Weir’s other winners on Wednesday were Kiwia, Kellstorm, The Passage and Renew who took out the Galleywood Hurdle.
