Waller takes aim at six Metropolitan 2014 starters

Chris Waller can’t rule out adding to an already formidable team of stayers in the running for the Group One Metropolitan if results go his way in a lead-up race at Rosehill on Saturday.

Waller has four definite Metropolitan runners in pre-post favourite Junoob, Bagman, Brigantin and Opinion but the premier trainer could easily end up having a third of the field in the $400,000 race.

Our Voodoo Prince is almost certain to make it five starters for Waller if he continues to please the stable since returning from Melbourne.

And if Multilateral races as well as bookmakers expect him to in the Colin Stephen Quality at Rosehill, Waller will seriously entertain the thought of a sixth runner in the best staying race of the Sydney spring carnival at Randwick on October 4.

“Multilateral is on the fringe of my Metropolitan horses,” Waller said.

“In reality we probably wouldn’t run him on Saturday if he was going to go there but if he came out and won decisively it would be something to give consideration to.”

Waller is rarely without multiple representation in Sydney Group One races, emphasised by the five horses he ran in the 2011 Metropolitan en route to training the quinella with The Verminator and Hawk Island.

He had four Metropolitan starters in 2012 and three last year to further confirm his training prowess with stayers.

There is a precedent through The Verminator for Multilateral to improve on his unplaced Newcastle Gold Cup run last week.

The Verminator ran below expectations as one of the favourites at Newcastle before winning the Metropolitan at his next start.

After taking out the Wyong Gold Cup, Multilateral felt a firm track at Newcastle in finishing seventh to Disclaimer but the import is challenging Travolta for Colin Stephen favouritism.

Secessio will also represent Waller in the Colin Stephen and he too is a Metropolitan entry after a last-start third to Multilateral at Wyong.

Junoob was promoted to the top of Metropolitan betting charts after winning the Hill Stakes last week, a slowly run weight-for-age race in which Bagman came from the back to fill the minor placing.
