Dane Ripper Stakes likely over Stradbroke Handicap for Firestorm

A wide draw in the Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) has prompted trainer Chris Waller to consider redirecting Firestorm to the Dane Ripper Stakes (1300m), potentially opening the door for stablemate Coleman to gain a start in the Group 1 feature.

Firestorm had originally been set to run in the Stradbroke, but drawing gate 16 may change those plans.

“If she had a good draw she would definitely be running (in the Stradbroke),” Waller said.

“She is good fresh and she has won a Group Two over 1300 metres and run second in a Coolmore (Classic) beaten a nose.

“My gut tells me, leave the Stradbroke, run her in the Dane Ripper and that will have her peaking for the Tatt’s Tiara in two weeks.”

Waller has until 5pm AEST on Wednesday to confirm which race Firestorm will contest.

Should she take her place in the Dane Ripper, Firestorm would join a formidable Waller contingent that includes Olentia, Konasana, and potentially Gumdrops, who is also nominated for a Listed event on the card.

The decision would also allow Coleman, currently first emergency, to gain a run in the Stradbroke. The colt showed improvement last start at Eagle Farm when placing in stakes company.

Although drawn wide in barrier 23, Waller isn’t too concerned, especially after discussions with Kerrin McEvoy, who is booked to ride.

“He ran second in a Golden Slipper when Kerrin rode him and he rode him last start as well and said he’s probably a horse that would appreciate a bit of room,” Waller said.

“He’s going well and the 1400 will suit him better.”

Since transferring to the Waller stable earlier this year, Coleman has already notched a Group 1 placing in the ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes over the same distance as the Stradbroke.
