Waller keeps faith with Wyong Cup 2014 trio

It will be the blue-collar workers of Chris Waller’s spring team of stayers trying to make a name for themselves in the Wyong Gold Cup on Friday.

But just because their form is not as decorated as their weight-for-age stablemates running the next day in the Chelmsford Stakes, it doesn’t mean Waller undervalues the potential of any future contribution to his yard.

Waller will be relying on Secessio, Brigantin and Multilateral for a third Wyong Cup win in four years.

And he is hoping the race can be the same turning point as it was for the 2011 winner The Verminator for at least one of them.

The Verminator enjoyed a reprieve with Waller following his Wyong win and a month later he earned a place on the trainer’s Group One honour roll in beating stablemate Hawk Island in the Metropolitan.

Of the trio, Multilateral seems to be the one Waller considers most likely to copy The Verminator despite being a minor disappointment at his most recent start.

“With a horse like Multilateral, you just don’t know,” Waller said.

“The Verminator was struggling to stay in the stable and he suddenly won seven or eight races, including a Group One.

“But they all fit the bill of being good horses who, with a bit of luck, can win.”

Bookmakers have ignored Waller’s dominance of middle-distance races in Sydney in making Destiny’s Kiss and Queenstown equal favourites at $5.

Destiny’s Kiss was rated unlucky not to finish closer than his fifth placing in the Rowley Mile while Queenstown has been kept away from the races since being brought undone by a speed battle in the Winter Challenge at Rosehill a month ago.

Randwick-trained mares My Sabeel and All Salsa share favouritism in an open market on the Mona Lisa Stakes.

But My Sabeel is not a certain starter because trainer Kevin Moses wants to check on Sydney’s weather before deciding between Wyong and the Tramway Stakes at Randwick.

If there is more rain in Sydney and Randwick figures in a downgrade, Moses said he favoured running My Sabeel on a likely wet track in the Tramway.
