Chris Waller has been in the racing game long enough to understand that luck can’t be predicted, but it’s exactly what he’s hoping for when Joliestar lines up for her next race.
She is set to compete in next Saturday’s Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington, marking her first start in Victoria since her victory in the Thousand Guineas late last year.
This will be Joliestar’s first experience racing down the Flemington straight, a tactical move by Waller to maximize her chances of securing another major win while shaking off a streak of unfortunate runs.
“She just needs a bit of confidence and a bit of luck, so we thought bringing her down to Flemington to run in the Newmarket next Saturday would be a good idea,” Waller said.
“She is certainly good enough in our opinion.
“Obviously it’s a different style of racing, but one that she should adapt to.”
Joliestar is sired by Zoustar, a Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes winner over 1200m at Flemington, a talent he has passed on to several of his offspring.
Sunlight claimed two of her three Group 1 titles on the straight track in both the Coolmore Stud Stakes and the Newmarket Handicap. Zoutori also won the Newmarket, while Ozzmosis delivered Zoustar another Coolmore Stud Stakes triumph.
The Newmarket Handicap will mark Joliestar’s second run of this campaign after she placed third in the Group 2 Expressway Stakes (1200m) despite racing wide.
Her last two performances before that saw her finish seventh in both the Golden Eagle and The Everest during the spring, where she encountered tough luck in running.
Last Friday, Joliestar had a trackwork session at Flemington under jockey Damian Lane. Waller noted that giving her a straight-track run serves multiple purposes, as her future race plans are still being determined.
“We love to give our horses an experience of running down the straight because there are so many great races here at Flemington, or even overseas if we want to travel, so it gives you that option,” he said.
Joliestar will have company in the Newmarket as stablemate Gatsby’s has also been entered, having been withdrawn from Saturday’s $1m Inglis Sprint to instead target the Group 1 event.
