News:
Godolphin trainer James Cummings has thought long and hard before deciding to give Demerara one more start this spring.
A winner at her first two starts for the campaign in Sydney, Demerara and stablemate Jorda run in Thursday’s Group Three Kennedy Plate (1100m) at Flemington.
Sent out odds-on favourite at Moonee Valley on October 28, Demerara finished third behind Blondie in the Crocket Stakes.
Cummings said jockey Brenton Avdulla, who has the ride on Thursday, is convinced the filly didn’t handle the track that day.
“We have had a good think about whether we wanted to run her one more time at this carnival and we liked the look of this race,” Cummings said.
“She has the ability to put herself right there and if she takes some nice experience away from Moonee Valley then she can certainly be competitive against these fillies.
“She looks to be in excellent order.”
Jorda finished sixth in the same race at Moonee Valley under Thursday’s jockey Hugh Bowman and didn’t get clear running in the race.
“She was blocked behind a wall of horses that day and was full of running,” Cummings said.
“She was ready to produce a really good sprint, so she looks like she’s ready for another attempt up the straight course.”
Demerara shares favouritism with the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Debonairly at $5 with Jorda quoted $11 in latest markets.
