Villiers Stakes 2013 day Tips – Randwick, Kensington racecourse

The Kensington track has raced so well since it’s opening a couple of months now, and with the Randwick course proper being not safe for racing, the Kenso will host Villiers Stakes Day this Saturday.

Race One: Australian Turf Club Handicap (74) 1400m Form Guide

Back Me: Chris Waller should win the race with either Black Revolver or The Alfonso. Leaning towards the former. He was a most impressive debut winner under the lights at Canterbury, then due to a victim of circumstances, he was ridden a bit too close to the speed last time out. With a sit, he can show what he did on debut and win this.
Big Danger: The Alfonso was a top winner last start at a very short quote at Canterbury. He has steadily improved with each run, and appears as if he’ll be better suited on a bigger track, which he finds here.
Roughie: Look for Dowdstown Charlie to hit the line late. He is first up after a mixed Spring, which resulted in a placing behind Eurozone whilst being outclassed alongside Savvy Nature and Complacent. This is his right level and will run on at the end.

Race Two: Inglis Nursery 1000m Form Guide

Back Me: Found this to be a three horse race between Super Willie, Dual Star and Believe Yourself. Going with the third of these, purely based on the barrier draw advantage and the fact she trialled really nicely late last month.
Big Danger: Super Willie is obviously a close relation to Hong Kong Derby contender Photon Willie, and he appears he has got some of his older brothers ability based on his latest trial, where he could have easily beat Unencumbered in the trial but wasn’t extended. We saw how impressive that horse is winning last Saturday, so there is a big watch on Super Willie.
Roughie: Dual Star had trialled well prior to her okay debut run behind top class juvenile Memorial at Rosehill. Draws much better here, has the race experience, and could easily win this without surprising.

Race Three: 2014 ATC Membership On Sale Handicap (78) 1800m Form Guide

Back Me: Loved the way Celtic Prince attacked the line to win last time out over the 1900m at Canterbury, sustaining a long run from about the 700m mark and powering clear late. Coming back in distance looks perfect, and the stable is flying at the moment. He has also been very well backed.
Big Danger: Blowin’ Your Mind took care of a pretty disgusting field at Kembla, sitting outside the leader before surging away late without being fully let down by Bowman, who sticks with the son of Encosta De Lago. This is a pretty thin race, and again Waller has placed his horse perfectly.
Roughie: There was a bit of merit to the win of At All Costs at Canterbury last start. He had to lump 58kg and was asked to carry it big time due to a strong tempo, but he eventually got balanced up on the home turn, surged late and won well. No reason why he can’t repeat the dose here.

Race Four: Inglis Christmas Cup 2400m Form Guide

Back Me: Very ordinary staying race. Sticking with Maluckyday here. I thought he was very good in the ATC Cup at Rosehill behind Travolta when fourth. Travolta walked them in front and gave nothing from the back a chance to run on, but he still fought to the line well. Again, pace doesn’t look hot, but perhaps he can sit a bit closer to the speed given that. Finally out to a decent trip…happy to stay with him.
Big Danger: Secessio has to be a threat given he does look the leader in the race. He was game in defeat when third behind Travolta, but he doesn’t have a turn of foot, so if Reith desires, he can lead and dictate when he wants to go for home.
Roughie: The other horse who can be on the pace and is a chance is Martinvast, who has been excellent without winning this time in. He was really strong last week when third to Solemn over the 1800m here. 2400m looks ideal and the jockey is in white hot form.

Race Five: Kari Aboriginal Rseources Handicap (78) 1150m Form Guide

Back Me: Joe Pride has an unbelievable record with tried horses joining his stable and winning early on in their campaign. Recoinage fits that bill I think. Go back through her form and it doesn’t read too bad. Runs behind Queen’s Elect and Lilliburlero were good without winning. Has trialled twice and looked really good in each, so expecting her to run a huge race fresh.
Big Danger: I’ve Got The Looks bolted in two back at Warwick Farm, then just got too far back here last start when fifth to Inside Job, beaten over a length. Drawn well here to sit a bit closer to the speed, and already she has been backed from $4.20 into $3.60.
Roughie: Oakfield Comet didn’t come up at all during the Winter, running four times and producing zilch. She is resuming here, but has won two barrier trials quite nicely in preparation for her first up run. On her day, she is capable of winning this. Keep an eye on her.

Race Six: Villiers Stakes 1550m Form Guide

Back Me: Going for some value and putting the tough Queenslander Listen Son on top. He was freshened up after winning over the mile at Doomben and ran a slashing second over the unsuitable distance of 1300m at Eagle Farm to Morning Captain, who franked the form with an excellent placing behind Better Than Ready. This horse looks to get a relatively soft time in front, and provided he handles the track, he’ll give you a great sight at odds.
Big Danger: Ninth Legion had absolutely no luck in the Festival behind White Sage, bumping into traffic all the way up the straight. From a wide barrier here, he won’t get held up here, and he looks a major player, as does Sysmo, who has been freshened since running a close second in a handy race during Cup Week.
Roughie: The interesting runner is Western Symbol. For mine, he has been set for this race first up because he has had a couple of really solid trials, and hit the line powerfully in the latest. Not sure if he has the zip to beat these, but he is certainly wound up for it.

Race Seven: Tab Rewards Handicap (80) 1400m Form Guide

Back Me: Toughest race of the day to sort out. Landed with Sir Berus on top. I didn’t mind his first up run at Canterbury behind Darciwood, before attacking the line hard late when third to Mecir at Rosehill. He usually takes a couple of runs to his straps, so the fact he has run well so far this time in suggests he is on target for a good campaign. He should get the speed in front to allow him to swamp late.
Big Danger: La Pieta was given a plum ride by McEvoy to get the job done last start at Rosehill. She has promised to win better races than this, but her manners have let her down. That win may give her the confidence to go right on with it and be a mare to follow for the Autumn.
Roughie: Turbulet Jet is in the same category as Sir Berus. He needs the pace on in front to give him any chance of winning. He got too far back last time out behind Mecir but still hit the line strongly. He can easily win this without surprising.

Race Eight: Razor Sharp Handicap 1150m Form Guide

Back Me: Can’t believe they are offering $15 about Jacquinot Bay in this. He was the eye catcher first up in the Starlight behind Zaratone, who had all the favours in front given there was on pace bias. Jacquinot Bay has drawn the fence, shouldn’t be too far away, and if he has held his form, or at least improved a little bit, he has to be in the mix. $15 is wrong.
Big Danger: You’d think for an 1150m blacktype race there’d be a ton of speed, but strangely there doesn’t appear to be, so once again Zaratone gets a great chance here. Should spear over from the wide barrier, roll along and give another great sight for his supporters.
Roughie: Dee ‘N’ Gee is resuming here after a third to Boban, beaten three lengths…that form looks pretty good for here! Trialled twice and looked pretty good in each. Drawn well, races good here, in form rider…a must include for exotics.
