Villiers Stakes 2013 could be switched to Kensington

Sydney’s summer showpiece meeting may be switched to the Kensington track with stewards unhappy with the state of Randwick’s course proper.

Racing NSW chief steward Ray Murrihy said the decision would rest with the Australian Turf Club but after an inspection on Saturday, he and his panel didn’t believe it was up to the standard required.

Next Saturday’s Group Two Villiers meeting also features the Christmas Cup and the Razor Sharp Handicap.

“It has a week to recover but the grass is not at its optimum,” Murrihy said.

“There are no safety concerns but it hasn’t recovered as well as we would have hoped.

“We have told the club it should consider its options.

“It will affect all distances and field sizes if they move it and it’s better to do it before nominations stage on Monday if that’s what’s going to happen.”

Jockeys and stewards walked the course proper on Saturday during the meeting which was held on the Kensington StrathAyr surface which has received a universal thumbs-up since it was opened a couple of months ago.

“Our role is to ensure safety and there is no problem there but the Kensington surface is superior,” Murrihy said.
