Victorian trainer Matt Cumani has confirmed an outbreak of strangles at his Ballarat training complex.

A horse at Matt Cumani’s Ballarat stable has been diagnosed with the contagious upper respiratory tract disease strangles.

Cumani says the horse has been isolated and he has shut down the stable block where the horse is housed.

The trainer issued a statement saying other horses who displayed clinical signs of the disease were being tested and so far the results were negative.

Under the Livestock Disease Control Act 1994, a person must report Strangles if they know or have reason to suspect that strangles is present in horses or horse products.

About Strangles:

Strangles is a highly contagious infectious disease of the upper respiratory tract. It is caused by a bacterium called Streptococcus equi (S.equi) and affects horses, ponies and donkeys.
