Victorian filly chases Tasmanian Oaks 2025 success

Trainer Liam Howley and the connections of Luvya Mumma have made the journey to Launceston in hopes of securing a ‘Black Type’ victory early in the filly’s career.

The Listed Tasmanian Oaks (2100m) on Friday night was chosen by Howley after Luvya Mumma claimed a dominant win in a 1612m maiden race at Kilmore on February 11.

After reviewing the Victorian racing calendar and finding no suitable race for the filly, Howley turned his attention across Bass Strait to find an appropriate challenge.

A potential bonus for Luvya Mumma, should she succeed, is the ‘Black Type’ she could add to her pedigree for future broodmare prospects.

“Her win at Kilmore was effortless, and we’ve always believed she has the potential for the 2000-metre distance,” Howley explained.

“This race has come at just the right time. If you look at the Victorian program, there aren’t many races available for horses like her trying to develop into stayers.”

“It’s a step up, and she’ll need to rise to the challenge, but seeing the nominations made me think this is the type of competition she’ll face at home eventually, so I thought we’d season her with a trip away.”

Victorian-trained fillies Suntora, Cinch, and Move The Torana have also made the trip to Tasmania to compete against six local three-year-olds on Friday night.

Howley mentioned that Luvya Mumma travelled by boat to Launceston on Tuesday night.

“When she arrived, she went straight to the feed bin, so she’s in great shape,” Howley said.

“The only concern is that she’s not very seasoned; this is only her fifth race start.”

“It’s a significant event for a three-year-old filly to make this journey, but we believe she’s talented, and hopefully, the experience will toughen her up for future challenges.”
