Victoria Derby Tips, Field Preview and Selections – 2020

The 2020 Victoria Derby headlines a massive day of racing at Flemington on Saturday and we are set for a very open edition of the Group 1 race.

It is the lightly-raced Young Werther that opened as a clear favourite, but there is an argument to be made for a number of horses in this field.

We have analysed every single horse in the field and our complete 2020 Victoria Derby tips can be found below.

Cherry Tortoni

Cherry Tortoni is the horse to beat in the 2020 Victoria Derby.

The Night Of Thunder gelding has had an ideal preparation for the Victoria Derby and he gives the impression that he will run out a strong 2500 metres.

Cherry Tortoni bounced back from an unlucky run in the Spring Champion Stakes to win the Drummond Golf Vase at The Valley on Saturday and I was really taken with his effort.

Billy Egan had him up and running a long way from home and he was still able to tough it out late.

He will need to settle in the second half of the field from the wide barrier draw and luck in running will be key, but I think that he can outstay his rivals late.

Albarado

Albarado heads into the Victoria Derby on the back of a nice win in the Neds Classic and he is one of the only horses that will bring winning form into this field.

There is actually a fair amount of substance to his form as he also found the line strongly behind Khoekhoe and Young Werther in the Super Impose Stakes.

The Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young stable have an excellent record in this race and Albarado does represent some value at his current quote.

Johnny Get Angry

Johnny Get Angry has been set for the Victoria Derby before he even made his racing debut and he looks as though he will have few issues running out the trip strongly.

I really liked the way that he found the line in the Super Impose Stakes, but he was no match for Cherry Tortoni in the Drummond Golf Vase and it is tough to see him turning-the-tables on his rivals.

Let’s Karaka Deel

There was plenty of betting support for Let’s Karaka Deel ahead of his past two race starts and he was a little bit disappointing on both occasions.

He looked to have every possible chance in the Neds Classic, but he died on his run late and I have genuine concerns over his ability to run out a strong 2500 metres.

I am happy to oppose him at his current price.

Young Werther

Young Werther is currently a clear favourite in Victoria Derby betting and is the x-factor in the race.

He immediately stamped himself as a horse to follow when he made his debut with a fast-finishing victory at Geelong and he lost no admirers when he stormed home late in the Super Impose Stakes.

Trainer Danny O’Brien elected to scratch him from the Drummond Golf Vase on Ladbrokes Cox Plate and that leaves him fairly underdone heading into this contest.

Young Werther is currently being assessed by the market on his potential, which he undoubtedly has, rather than what he has actually produced on the track and I can’t get him anywhere near as short as his current quote.

Hit The Shot

Hit The Shot wasn’t beaten far by Albarado and Let’s Karaka Deel in the Neds Classic and he ran some of the fastest closing sectionals in the race.

The Dundeel colt has improved each time that he has been seen at the races and he does appear to be peaking at the right time heading into the Victoria Derby.

$7 is around the right mark and he is right in this contest.

Cetshwayo

Cetshwayo stamped himself as a Victoria Derby contender with his win in the Victoria Derby Trial, but he raced a little bit flat after being well-backed in the Neds Classic.

It is tough to back him in this contest off that effort, but I’m not sure there should be as big a difference between his price and that of Let’s Karaka Deel.

Redwood Shadow

Redwood Shadow is another horse that comes out of the Neds Classic and there is no doubt that he has upside.

He ran the fastest closing 800 metres in the Neds Classic, but he was found wanting a little bit late and Hit The Shot stormed past him in the concluding stages.

I can’t get him as short as $9.50.

Wertheimer

Wertheimer heads into the Victoria Derby on the back of relatively flat efforts in both the Victoria Derby Trial and the Spring Champion Stakes.

It is tough to back him in this contest off that effort.

Tour Of Duty

Tour Of Duty produced an eye-catching effort to finish a close second in the Victoria Derby Trial and he wasn’t disgraced in the Neds Classic.

He does seem like a grinding stayer that will keep finding the line and I don’t think running out a strong 2500 metres will be an issue for him.

I’m not sure he has the class to win, but I think that he can produce a better effort than the $26 currently available suggests.

Token Spirit

Token Spirit heads into the Victoria Derby on the back of relatively plain efforts in both the Victoria Derby Trial and the Geelong Classic.

He is one of the outsiders in this race for a reason.

Born To Succeed

Born To Succeed was able to break through for a maiden race win at Wodonga last start and before that he was soundly beaten in the Super Impose Stakes.

Wisaka

Wisaka heads into the Victoria Derby as a maiden and I don’t think that he has the upside of a horse like Preferment.

Kenzan

Kenzan is another maiden and he was soundly beaten in the Victoria Derby.

I can’t have him in this race.
