In doing so, he denied the might of the Darley operation, the global racing and breeding powerhouse run by Sheikh Mohammed.
Polanski raced midfield and he arrived on the scene as a potential winner as the field headed for home.
Darley colt Complacent issued a brief challenge before Polanski drew clear over the final 200m.
The Anthony Cummings outsider Thunder Fantasy finished third.
Polanski gave jockey Hugh Bowman his third Derby win in four years.
“Of the three Derby winners this guy is the strongest,” he said.
“I took a lot of confidence out of the ride I had on him at Caulfield two weeks ago. I knew he’d stay the distance.”
