Trainer Tony McEvoy has confirmed a bold Queensland campaign for his Group 1 winner Veight, who is set to launch his winter assault in the Doomben 10,000 (1200m) this Saturday.
Now a gelding, Veight returns to the track after being given time to reset following an uncharacteristic spring, and McEvoy, who trains in partnership with his son Calvin, says the change has already delivered results.
“It wasn’t an ideal decision to have to make, but we thought it was in the best interest of the horse,” McEvoy said. “He seems very good, and he’s acting right, which is great.”
Veight’s spring campaign was derailed by barrier woes and erratic behavior, culminating in a 19th-place finish in the Golden Eagle. The stable is confident the gelding procedure will help him recapture his best form.
McEvoy has mapped out a three-race Brisbane path for Veight, progressing to the Kingsford Smith Cup (1300m) and Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) later this winter.
Despite some caution over Saturday’s likely wet track, McEvoy is encouraged by Veight’s draw of barrier nine, which gives jockey Andrew Mallyon tactical flexibility.
“Middle of the pack, that should allow Andrew to ride him where he’s comfortable. He’s not as forward as I would hope, but the run will improve him,” he said.
Veight is currently listed at $26 in betting markets, where Overpass leads the field at $3.70. Sunshine In Paris ($5) and Schwarz ($5.50) are also prominent.
